Foodie Friday – Lynd’s Fruit Farm

Last weekend, the Suncrisp and Melrose apples were ripe for picking.  And, last weekend, we joined my college roomie for our annual ‘apple picking extravaganza’.  We always travel out to Lynd’s Fruit Farm, some weekend in October, for their delicious selection of apples and pears.  The tradition started originally because of Lynd’s close proximity to our alma mater.  And, ever since, it has been our ‘go to’ place for a bit of fall fun.

This last week, we received our first frost of the season.  And, with that, as I’m sure you know, went the last of our fruit.  Now, we are in for the long haul of stored and canned and frozen fruits that we so carefully selected during the growing season.

Each year, with my haul of apples from Lynd’s, I make sweet and tangy applesauce.  No sugar needed.  A little bit of cinnamon goes a long way.  This year, my 8 jars of applesauce say we’re in for a good winter. That’s 40lbs of apples, which sounds like a lot, but really isn’t.  At Lynd’s, it’s very easy to get carried away and pick more than you know what to do with.  We’re always striving to fill the bags to the brim, and to try a few along the way.  In the past, we’ve eaten so many, we went home full and bloated with the sweet taste of fall.

There are many orchards in and around the C-bus area, and beyond.  I encourage everyone to get out to your local orchard this fall and pick a few apples.  Maybe gather some family members, or reconnect with old friends.  Take the kids with you. It’s important that they know exactly where their food comes from.  Either way, support your local orchards.  There’s nothing like a pear or an apple straight off the tree.

    Mmmmm! Apples straight from the tree! How sweet is life. Aunt Karen gave me a tip on keeping apples fresh. In order to keep your apples fresh throughout the winter and even into the spring, you should put them into a closed/sealed plastic bag and keep in a cool, dry place (like your refrig).
