i feel so lucky that our park system is amazing.  we recently discovered, beyond the playground, or the farm, or the bison, that our parks are offering ‘natural play areas’ for kids to explore their surroundings.  these are designated spaces where kids can roam through the woods.  there is no real path to stay on.  they can climb through the woods as they please.  and there are ‘planned’ spots for the kids to stumble upon and discover, like a big pile of boulders, or a teepee made of fallen branches.  these spaces, of course, change with the seasons.  they keep our interest all year round and they put us in direct contact with nature.  children innately know how to challenge and exercise their own bodies, and they don’t need help doing it.  all the moves are within their imagination, and there’s nothing quite like nature to bring these things to the forefront.
