a poem

December 10, 2012

i know it’s been a while.  i apologize. and i’ll explain more later.

i used to write poetry, as a child, as a teenager, and at a diminishing pace as an adult.  it’s been over two years since i wrote anything noteworthy.  kids will do that to you, i guess.  i don’t know if it’s noteworthy, but i felt a need for presence on this blog, for simplicity and a small ‘hello’.  i could have put up another photo… but that’s been done before.

It’s Been a While

i am heavy

like a chest of drawers

each drawer brimming

with secret words

full with the tumult

of letters

like a tide

high

and black

someday,

you will open the drawers

and curl back the pages

of my life

and what will you think,

then?

i wrote for you thinking,

pity me.

i write now thinking,

forget me.

for who i am

but a girl weighed down

by the pressure of

pen on paper,

so young

so fresh the ink.

i thought i had lived

but i know now

i am empty

weighted by my own

hot air

grasp my hand firmly

and pry out

the crushed nib

and the joints

and say,

mother, now you are

free

now we close

this spine wrapped

in linen

and place it

in the pine box

now we rip

your paper-thin

surface

and scatter the bits

to the wind

where once,

i heard a bird

whisper

so many tidings

of change
