a moment for us to share in the garden spaces that bring us joy, inspiration and self-sufficiency.

today’s photos are from Jacob Rodriguez-Noble of Takoma Park, MD.  Jacob is a specialist in Middle Eastern Studies, an avid runner and craftsman, and newly endeared to community gardening.

he writes, “These are photos from the Sligo Mill Overlook Community Garden in Takoma Park, MD, organized by the Montgomery County park system.  Montgomery County has a number of community gardens throughout the area, and they seem to be extremely popular.  The Sligo Mill Overlook Community Garden is 100% full for the 2012 season.  It features 34 plots, each either 200 or 400 square feet and is equipped with storage space, mulch and wood chips, a compost bin, and a water cistern.  Not even the hot weather (we are roasting at about 100 degrees today) can keep away the community.  One woman I talked with, in her first season with the garden, was very excited about her plants (she had tomatoes, squash, and lettuce, and various flowers) and is looking forward to experimenting next year with Japanese plants including wasabi.  All in all, there was a splendid mixture of food, (including corn, tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries, lettuce, and grapes), and flowers.  It looks highly organized, and as I told the woman “very therapeutic.”  The Sligo Mill Overlook Community Garden is supported by Grow It Eat It: Maryland’s Food Gardening Network.”
